Submersion Does Not Teach the Baby to Swim – A Member’s Letter
Earlier this month, world renowned Swimming Tutor Terje Stakset stopped off at Hainford, Norfolk, on his short lecture tour of the UK to conduct a seminar for teachers at local swimming schools. His theme was Swim with Love and focused upon baby teaching from the baby’s point of view!
Submersion does not teach the baby to swim. Where is the child going to swim when (s)he is three years’ old? On the surface! Why not teach to swim on the surface from the start?
As well as the skill of empathy, teachers should be able to ‘read’ the baby before it is too late and act upon on the available clues, explained Norwegian Terje who went on to clarify submersions of babies.
Other topics were the Moro Reflex, Corrosive Cortisol, the use of open soft hands whilst in the water with the child, progression at an early age and what makes teachers great.
The seminar was well received with teachers and epitomises the importance of CPD in the region

The event was organised by local tutor Julie Kamara and the following day Terje conducted the seminar again in Rugby.
