STA Unleashes its New Teaching Qualification for Dogs
As organised group and personalised swimming sessions for dogs have gained popularity in recent years, STA has responded by creating the industry’s first regulated teaching qualification for canine swimming.

This new ‘Award in Teaching Swimming for Canines’ has been developed by STA to train learners on how to professionally plan and teach fun, motivating, and inclusive aquatic canine classes fur doggie participants of all ages and abilities.
The curriculum, which has been approved by a world-renowned dog whisperer, covers the following topics:
- Understanding dog participants
- Teaching approaches and strategies, from first puppy paws to older dogs
- Confidence practices and games
- Exercising in the water for health and wellbeing, including basic rehabilitation
- Consideration of different aquatic environments, from outdoor pools to hydro pools
- Understanding fears and barriers
- Swimming, diving and water safety skills
- Health and safety.
To support accessibility in gaining this qualification, STA has also created a short online pre-course programme titled ‘A Basic Understanding of Anatomy and Physiology in Relation to Canine Exercise’ that learners can complete in their own time prior to attending the 3-day face-to-face course. This pre-course covers the difference in dog breeds, their body types, genetics, coats, bone structures and breathing capacities, in relation to their physical capabilities in the water.
Helen Done, Qualifications and Business Development Manager at STA, says;
“We are barking mad about dogs so we are very excited to announce the launch of this first-of-its kind qualification today. It has been in development for a while, which included working with a renowned dog whisperer to ensure it is of the highest quality standards for our doggie companions.”
“Like for us humans, exercising in water is a great low-impact way for dogs of all ages and abilities to improve their health and well-being, so the more professional canine swimming teachers we can train, the more dogs will be able to benefit. Plus, it’s a very sociable activity, and we can’t wait to unleash the paw-some fun!” added Helen.
This new qualification from STA is aimed at learners who wish to work as a canine swimming teacher – there is no previous experience required, but a love of dogs is a must! Note, it is not a qualification for those wanting to work in the medical or veterinary profession in an animal rehabilitation or physio capacity.

A special thank you to Huxley the dog for all his help in the “research” phase!
While there’s no official swimming course for our furry friends (yet!), we’re still here to provide high quality qualifications and support for you.
Hope you had a splash of fun with us! 🌊
